Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

For some, it’s best to monitor their child’s progress throughout life, so it’s important to have a healthcare provider you trust. Many features seen with fetal alcohol syndrome may also occur in children with other disorders. The CDC explains that there’s no safe time to consume alcohol during pregnancy. Exposure in the first 3 months may cause physical abnormalities, such as those affecting facial features. Alcohol use at any time during pregnancy may lead to issues with growth or the central nervous system.

Dealing with behavioral problems

  1. Clinicians should also identify maternal high-risk groups for prenatal alcohol exposure according to their drinking patterns.
  2. A healthcare professional specializing in FAS can help determine the cause.
  3. Adolescents exposed prenatally to cocaine, alcohol, or cigarettes showed reductions in total brain volume and in gray matter in the brain’s cerebral cortex, important in many cognitive functions.
  4. The research also demonstrated that co-exposure to CBs and alcohol increased the likelihood of birth defects involving the face and brain.
  5. Don’t start an alcohol elimination program without telling your healthcare provider.

The symptoms of 4 ways to pass a drug test tend to get worse as a person grows up. Call your child’s doctor for an appointment if you have any concerns about your child’s growth and development. Also, let your child’s doctor know if you drank alcohol during your pregnancy, and if so, how much and how often. At the same time as you ask the doctor for a referral to a specialist, call your state or territory’s early intervention program to request a free evaluation to find out if your child can get services to help. You do not need to wait for a doctor’s referral or a medical diagnosis to make this call.

Signs and Symptoms

An estimated 50–۹۰% of people with FASD are also diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and many other people have secondary mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Lifelong treatment is required and is more effective if collaborative care coordination occurs between all professional agencies. The families of people with FAS should also be included in treatment interventions. Alcohol how much does the average american spend on alcohol was not viewed as dangerous for pregnant people until 1973 when the diagnosis of FAS was first implemented. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not make a public awareness announcement about the side effects of alcohol use during pregnancy until 1977. Because many people do not know they are pregnant during those first few weeks, the risk of FAS increases if you drink alcohol and have unprotected sex.

Problems Later in Life

Women who need help to stop drinking alcohol can talk to their health care provider about treatment options. There are a variety of treatments available for pregnant women, including behavioral treatment and mutual-support groups. Visit the NIAAA Alcohol Treatment Navigator® to learn more about evidence-based treatments for alcohol-related problems. FASD is a developmental disorder with a specific phenotype requiring long-term management [34]. It has a high recurrence rate, and younger siblings tend to be more severely affected [34].

How is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) treated?

The FDA has designated specific drugs for treating the symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol in babies. However, there is no treatment for lifelong birth defects and intellectual disability. Babies and children with alcohol-related damage often need developmental follow-up and, possibly, long-term treatment and care. Using alcohol during pregnancy is the leading cause of preventable birth defects, developmental disabilities and learning disabilities.

Investigating the use of other potential teratogens during pregnancy is also important [12,44]. Smoking and drinking are highly correlated; therefore, alcoholics are more likely to be heavy smokers [37]. Marijuana, cocaine, and caffeine are also significantly correlated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy [37].

Previous FASD estimates were based on smaller study populations and did not reflect the overall U.S. population. The research also demonstrated that co-exposure to CBs and alcohol increased the likelihood of birth defects involving the face and brain. Combined prenatal smoking and drinking greatly increases SIDS risk (January 20, 2020)SIDS is the sudden, unexplained, death of an infant under one year of age. Many studies have shown that the risk of SIDS is increased by maternal smoking during pregnancy.

Binge drinking is defined as the consumption of 5 or more drinks on a single occasion (a standard drink is defined as approximately 14 g of pure alcohol) [24,28]. This is because a higher peak blood alcohol concentration worsens fetal brain damage and leads to prolonged alcohol exposure; therefore, metabolizing all the alcohol that has been consumed lsd overdose takes time [24]. Recently, several studies have objectively assessed the patterns of maternal alcohol consumption and identified infants who exhibit FAS-related deficits in growth by biological analysis [29–۳۲]. Prenatal alcohol exposure is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and neurodevelopmental disorders in the United States.

Other helpful resources include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). It’s important to understand that FASDs can result from occasional drinking as well. FASDs are caused by alcohol use at any time throughout pregnancy.

But since the alcohol is no longer available, the baby’s central nervous system becomes over stimulated, causing symptoms of withdrawal. Alcohol withdrawal may begin within a few hours after birth, and symptoms may last up to 18 months. Alcohol exposure during pregnancy can result in FASD by interfering with development of the baby’s brain and other critical organs and physiological functions.
